Where this list comes from

Compiled by SpellChirp from common classroom themes. These are our own lists, and like everything else on these pages they are free to read, copy and print.

Words grouped by the theme a classroom is doing — a holiday, a season, a topic. Not a published curriculum: a ready-made list for the week the homework names a subject and leaves the word-picking to you.

How to practise a list this long

Not all at once. Five to ten words a week is the pace that sticks; a list of a hundred is a term’s work, not a weekend’s, and a child who meets ten words five times learns more than one who meets fifty once.

Most theme words play fair — they spell the way they sound, one syllable at a time. Say the word slowly, write a syllable per beat, then check. The long ones are the fun ones: evergreen is a handful of easy pieces, not one hard word.

Count a word as learned when it has been spelled correctly on three separate days. That is the rule SpellChirp uses, and it is roughly where a word stops needing to be looked up.
